FLAS Fellowships

CEAPS

FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND AREA STUDIES FELLOWSHIPS (FLAS)

Fellowships support undergraduate and graduate study of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Tibetan

Fellowships are available for Graduates and Undergraduates which could include a tuition and fee waiver along with a stipend of up to $5000 for Undergraduates and $15000 for Graduates.

Academic Year Fellowships Eligibility:

Graduate students:

• Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
• Current or former FLAS fellows may apply; priority is given to applicants for a first or second FLAS
• Currently must be enrolled as a graduate student OR have applied for a graduate program
• Enrolled (or applied for enrollment) in a program that combines modern foreign language (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean) with international or area studies, or research and training in the international aspects of professional or other fields of study.

Undergraduate students:

• Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
• Currently need to be enrolled as an undergraduate student
• Must study the language at intermediate or advanced level during the fellowship year
• Must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

FLAS Fellowships Selection Criteria

• Academic achievement
• Demonstrated commitment and intent to use the language and area studies knowledge in future studies and/or professional career
• Letters of reference

Academic Year Fellowships Requirements:

• Enrolled full time (12 hours) both semesters
• Registered for approved language courses and one relevant area study course per semester (501, 502 for grad students; any EALC 300-level or higher level course for undergraduates)
