The IL/IN East Asian Education Network was established
in 2005 as a collaborative initiative to support networking and
exchange of research on East Asian education among faculty and
graduate students at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana
and Indiana University-Bloomington. The Network has quickly grown
from a small core group of participants from the two campuses to
more than 40 attendees in the second year from Minnesota, Illinois,
Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.
The network’s first event was
hosted by EAPS on September 23, 2005. A panel discussion, Educational
Transformation in East Asia, was preceded by a networking lunch
and followed by a dissertation workshop.
The network convened for the second time on April 22, 2006 for
a dissertation workshop hosted by the East Asian Studies Center
(EASC) at Indiana University. The day-long meeting was designed
as a dissertation workshop, in which participating Indiana and
Illinois students and faculty discussed one chapter from three
students' dissertations. Indiana and Illinois doctoral students
served as discussants for each workshop session.
The third meeting
in October 2006 featured a keynote address on “The
Transformation of Chinese Higher Education from Elite to Mass Institutions” by
Dr. Jing LIN, associate professor of education policy and leadership
at the University of Maryland.
The fourth gathering was held in
Bloomington, In on April 21, 2007. This meeting was again a dissertation
workshop, with three presenters and respondents.
Ran ZHANG, dissertation
presenter at the Fall 2005 event, offered, “I
appreciate the workshop’s small group format which made for
extensive interaction and exhcnage among participants in a way that
larger, more formal conferences do not allow.” Lei WANG presented
on “Schooling, Girls’ Identity and Educational Expectation
in Rural Shanxi, China” in Spring 2006. She commented, “It
was nice to see so many people interested in studying East Asia.
I received good feedback.” |
