(a) To stimulate and promote the region as a field of study in the University, community, region, and state.
(b) To serve as the instrument for generating resources and maintaining multidisciplinary cooperation in support of academic aims, and facilitating coverage of East Asian and Pacific areas in educational programs across campus.
(c) To stimulate the intellectual activities of its faculty and the involvement of the university and the community by supporting visiting lecture series, seminars, workshops, student and faculty research, publication, and extracurricular activities.
(d) To promote scholarly exchange with educators and researchers in East Asian and Pacific areas.
(e) To address emerging needs of the increasing body of East Asian scholars and students on campus.
