Mandarin Summer Language Camp

The Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies (CEAPS), in collaboration with the Confucius Institute at the University of Illinois, is pleased to offer a two-week summer Mandarin language camp for high school students from July 17th – 28th. The language camp is offered free of charge for all participants. Students will learn the basics of Mandarin language conversation, writing, and reading, with a focus on functional conversation. Students will also learn about Chinese history, culture, and art.

The camp is intended for students who are preparing to enter grades 9-12 for the 2017-2018 school year and who have had no prior experience with Mandarin language instruction. It will be run as a day camp, with students attending from 9:30 – 1:30 most days. Lunch will NOT be provided for most days, but students will be given a break with snacks in the late morning. Students and their families are responsible for transportation to and from the camp. Students and their families are responsible for their own lodging during the camp. The camp will conclude with a lunch program for students and their families at which the students will demonstrate what they have learned.

The camp will be led by instructors who are experienced in Mandarin language instruction with supervision from faculty from the College of Education. In order to give the opportunity for individual attention in instruction, class size will be limited to 15 students. All applicants will be required to submit a brief essay of interest and a recommendation letter, both of which will be used to determine acceptance into the program. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by mid-June. This program does NOT grant university credit.

Attention: Now that school is out, we have waived the requirement for a letter of recommendation to apply for the summer language camp . Feel free to skip that section when you get to the final page of the application. The personal application essay is still required.
